INVERCARGILL.
September 2. At a meeting of settlers at Heddon Bush, it was resolved to form a company to construct a line under the District Railways Aot from Mainatuka to join the Government railway at Wairoa. The shares are fixed at £5 each, and one thousand were taken up immediately. Other meetings are to be held, and it is expected that tbe project will meet with general support. During a thunderstorm yesterday a colt belonging to a settler at Waikiwi was killed by lightning. Five people standing near the animal say they experienced a sensation of being slightly stunned. Joseph Morton, well-known as a taxidermister, committed suicide this morning by taking a quantity of arsenic, it is supposed halt an ounce. His wife noticed him vomiting, and sent for a doctor, but the deceased gradually got worse and died. He left a memorandum in which he took leave of his wife and family, and forgave all his enemies and " all people that on earth do dwell." Deceased was a clever naturalist, but had given way to unsteady habits for some time past.
