NAPIER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce took place yesterday afternoon, Mr J. G. Kinross presiding. The report of the committee as referred to by us yesterday was read and adopted.
The Chairman stated that he had received a telegram from Mr Buchanan, M.H.R., informing him that the survey of Elrnan's route, in relation to the construction of the North Island main trunk railway, would be proceeded with on the rising of the House. In reference to this subject, Mr M. R. Miller said the produce of the district through which Elman'sline ran was now some 4000 bales of wool, and an export of 38,000 sheep. After pome discussion on the Bankruptcy Bill, a vote of thanks was passed to Mr F. Sutton, M.H.R., for his able representation of the Chamber at the late conference.
i Mr Miller thought that the Chamber should record its disapproval of the action taken by Mr Buchanan in the House •with reference to the vote for the NapierWoodville railway. He therefore moved, " That thia Chamber approves of the action of the Minister for Public Works in not disturbing the appropriation of £160,000 for the Napier-Woodville \ railway." Mr Walker eeconded the motion, which was carried. A circular from the Wairoa County Council, covering resolutions passed by that body in reference to the opening up of the country by roade, was read and approved of, and in replying to it the secretary was instructed to point out the omission of all mention of the Wairoa-Napier-road. Mr Miller said that the statistics attached to the committee's report, though perfectly correct as far as they went, were calculated to give a wrong impression of the value of the exports of the district. The direct exports from Napier only had been given, and no account was taken of the wool shipped from coast stations to other ports, or taken from Napier coastwise. The actual exports of wool were valued at £588,374. Tallow was worth £32,885 ; sperm and whale oil, £1872; hides, £2164; preserved meats, £719; potatoes, £1265; maize and grass eeed, £2839 ; shcepskinp, r £3505; giving total exports valued at £633,623, without counting cattle and sheep of the value of £59,300 exported to other provinces. • On the motion of Mr Miller the Chamber recorded its gratification at the success that had attended the export of frozen meat from Dunedin. Mr Miller said it v,as probable a vessel fitted with
refrigerating machinery would be dispatched from Napier this year. The scale of mercantile charges drawn up by the committee .was adopted, aud ordered to be printed.
Additional members were elected, and after votes (A thanks had been passed to the three Hawke's Bay members, and to the chairman, the meeting adjourned.
