There is no truth in the report that scab has broken out in this part of the East Coast. Mr C. S. Pasley, Chief Inspector of Sheep, returned last night from Nuhaka, and states that the report originated through some sheep belonging to the natives having lost their wool, and the sun caused blisters and scab, which gave rise to the report. Mr J. Stevens, M.H.R., is op a visit to Waihi station.
A native lad, aged five years, was drowned whilst bathing with others yesterday on the ocean beach, near Kihitu. He seems to have gone beyond his depth unnoticed, and sunk. Paraone Ahiorehas joined the majority. His death is believed to be due to witchcraft.
Caledonian sports will be held at Frasertown on Boxing Day, and a race meeting takes place at Mohaka. Sir John Coode's report on the Wairoa harbor improvements is published. It advocates the expenditure of £9000 on two training walls and concrete piers 3000 feet long, giving a depth of from 14 to 16 feet at high water in the entrance.
