THE ASCENT OF TONGARIRO.

[To the Editor of the Daily Telegeaph.] Sir,—l have just read your telegram from Taupo iv re the assent of Tongariro. As an old traveller in that locality allow me to state that the ascent of the hill has been made by several—amongst them the present Sir G. Grey. The height is very little over 6000 feet, and some miles from the actual King country. Having been surveyor for the natives in that district will I hope excuse my troubling you with the truth.—l am, &c, John S. Wilkinson, C.E., Surveyor, etc. December 19, 1881.
