WAIROA HARBOR BOARD.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 7. The Board met at 2 p.m. in the County Hall. Fresent: Messrs M. R. Miller, Tunks, Brown, and Williams. Mr M. R. Miller in the chair. It was resolved to ask the Waste Lands Board to vest the pilot reserve, which had not been yet vested, in the Board. The Chairman suggested that a fresh application should be made to the Government for a grant in aid for improving the navigation of the Upper Wairoa, and spoke strongly in support. The following resolution was carried: •—-That, in view of the large area of Crown lands shortly to be placed in the market (Ruakituri and other blocks), and the fact that the river can easily be made navigable for. steamers to within three miles of the Ruakituri block at Mangarube by the removal of a few snags and boulders, tbe Board would respectfully suggest to the Hon. tbe Minister for Laud's that a sum of £500 be placed at the disposal to be locally expended in improving the navigation of tbe Wairoa river between Clyde and Te Marumaru. The Board bases its

request on the fact that the Wairoa river, together with its confluence, drains some 900,000 acres, of which some 250,000 or 300,000 acres are in the hands ot the Crown, said lands being now in course of survey for sale, and it would add greatly to their value and speedy settlement to have water carriage so convenient. The Board therefore trusts tbe Government will see the necessity for acceeding to tbe request. It was decided to apply to the County Council for funds to open the entrance to the river.
