HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB'S SPRING MEETING.

The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club held their spring meeting yesterday on the Hastings course, which attracted a large number of people from Napier and tbe country districts. It is estimated there were between 2500 and 3000 people on tbe ground during tbe day. Tbe two trains from Napier were crowded with passengers, several trucks also being brought into requisition, and a large number of private carriages were on the course. The completeness of tbe arrangements yesterday in every respect was the subject of general remark, and the course itself was in excellent condition. Situated as it is in an exceptionally good position, the view from the Grand Stand of the surrounding country is one not easily to be surpassed in the colony. There were two totalizators on the ground whicb did a brisk business, but there was considerable complaint on the score of both machines having been inoide tbe paddock, 'many of the general public being unable to invest in tbem without paying the usual paddock entrance fee. An excellent luncheon was served by Mr Johnson in the spacious dining room attached to the Grand Stand, and tbe booths under Mr Ashton's management appeared to do a thriving trade. The Artillery Band was present, and played at intervals during the day. Tbe weather on the whole was excellent, the high wind which prevailed in the earlier part of the day having dropped as the afternoon advanced. The first event was the
