SUBSIDIES TO LOCAL BODIES.

The following clauses are embodied in the Appropriation Bill:—In lieu of sums payable as subsidies to County and Borough Councils, and to Road Boards and River Boards under section 5 of the Finanancial Arrangements Act 1876 Amendment Act, 1877, there Bhall be paid out of the consolidated fund during tbe nine months of the current financial year, from the first day of April last past and on the thirtyfirst day of next December (both days inclusive) in Tespect of all sums received by way of general rates during the year ending the thirty-first day of March, 1880, the suras following: (1) To each Borough Council a sura equal to 7s 6d for every £1 of general rates so received by such Council. (2) To each Road Board and River Board a sum equal to 10s for every £1 of general rates bo received by each such Board. (3.) To each County Council a sum equal to 10s for every £1 of general rates so received by each such Council, or equal to 10s for every £1 on the total of the sums so received by all Road Boards or parts of Road Boards witbin the County, whichever of such two sums is greater. Provided tbat in any County where no Road Board exists, or in respect of general rates levied in any part of a county not included in a road district, there shall be paid to the Council of each such County 20a for every £l of general rates so received. Provided that for the purposes of this section no sum shall be deemed to be received by any such Council or Board in excess of the sum receivable on a rate of Is in the £1 of the annual value of rateable property, and this proviso shall be deemed to have been in operation in any previously existing enactment providing for the payment of subsidies to local bodies.
