A LITTLE ADVENTURE.
Mr Goschen met with a singular little adventure at the binds of the Russian police while passing through Odessa on hirecent return home. n n his landing from the British steamer Penelope he repaired tithe nalace of the Governor-General, Prince Don ?u!.ow Korsnkow, wit 1 - whom he was t" dii-e. After dinner ha visited the city, and at 8 p.m. went, to the ra : lwav station, Kulik'iwo-Pole, accompanied by his secretary and two other members of the Te ration, nil as a matter of course, wearing plain civilian* dress. t. the station, where it had become known that a " high personage " was to e-ib-M-k v> th" tr-iin, the police found mue' diffi-ulty in keeping a free passage through (he assembled crowd. Almost simultaneously with the above gentlemen there also arrived the captain of the Penelope in full uniform wearing a number of decorations, for the purpose of bidding the ex-Ambassador Go't-speed. ' he Unssian policemen did not he-iln'e to take the "''owily-dressed naval officer for the " high personage" expected, and were not a little angry nt nn apparently simple spectator's arrogance in proceeding the georg-ouslvattired sailor. Afraid of being unplpnsfintly demonstrative, they contented themselves, however, with sharply eyeing the civilian intruder. When the party reached the entrance of the rirst-ria-ssaloon, and the forward civilian attempted to enter first, they could no longer contain themselves, and deftly pulled the unsuspecting ambassador by tho collar of his coat back among the crowd of bystanders. Mr Goschen's terror at fhis sudden and rather rough interference of the servants of the Russian hermandad may be readily imagined. The mistake was fortunately speedily explained much to tho oomfort of Her Majesty's representative who expected, perhaps that the route to Siberia would be taken.—Home f" ; ews.
