The proprietor of the Katno collier has offered the captain of the ship Dunkeld a good freight to take coal instead of ballast on the voyage to San Francisco. Judge Grillies to-day refused an application for a new trial in the slander case of Crawford v. Johstone, heard at the last civil sessions, when a verdict was returned for the defeodaDt. He said that, though it was proved that the defendant had made a false statement affecting the plaintiff's chastity, he had done so in conSdence to the girl's late employer, and the surrounding circumstances showed that the statement was not made maliciously.
