July 19. In the House of Commons to-day a question was put to the Premier with a view of ascertaining the intention of the British Government in regard to the present state of affairs in Tunis. In reply Mr Gladstone stated that diplomatic communications were passing between the Foreign Office and the French Government in reference to Tunisian affairs, and some decision would shortly be arrived at as to the action, if any, to be taken by England. The Australian and New Zealand mails via Suez and Brindisi, which left Melbourne on June 7, were delivered here to-day. July 20. In the House of Commons last night the Irish Land Bill was further considered in committee, when the remaining clauses to the last were duly passed. The few clauses' which have heen postponed during the progress of the bill in committee will vow be brought up for final consideration. At the annual meeting of the National Rifle Association of Wimbledon the Queen's prize (second stage), consisting of the Association's gold medal and £250, has heen won by Private Deck, of the 3rd Devon Volunteer corps, who made the score of 86 marks, the highest on record. Telegrams are to hand from America stating that, despite the settlement ot the Fortiscue Bay fisheries dispute, which was arrived at last month, fresh differences are now arising between the American and Canadian fishermen regarding the rights of the former in Newfoundland waters. Communications have already passed between the American and English Governments in regard to the points now in dispute.
