June 7. At f he largest meeting ever held in Rivertion the question of checking Chinese immigration was discussed, and a series of resolutions were adopted, to to the effect that the Government be petitioned to adopt remedial measures, and apply the same regulation to intercolonial steamers as is applied for foreign vessels in regard to inspection by the health officer, and any Chinese on board to be fumigated, together with their effects ; that captains and owners of vessels be held responsible for the importation of diseased Chinamen ; that all Chinese in the colony and to arrive pay a tax of £20 yearly ; and that the co-operation of other districts inte r es'ed be solicited in endeavoring to give effect to the above. Fears are felt for the safety of the cutter Hannah which left Stewart Island two months ago with a party for Million Bird Island. The party were landed safely, and the cutter left to return, but has not since been heard of. At the annual meeting of the Licensing Court all applications for renewals were granted, except for four wooden hotels, which were held over pending arrangements for rebuilding.
