MR WHITAKER, M.H.R., BEFORE HIS CONSTITUENTS.

(By Telegraph.)

Auckland, June 6

Mr Whitaker addressed his Waipa constituents on Saturday night. He supported the property tax as preferable to the land tax, and congratulated the Ministry on their efforts to place the public finances in a satisfactory condition, and also on Mr Hall's declaration not to allow the Home Government to interfere in native affairs. He disagreed with the proposed change in the constitution of the Legislative Council. He deprecated any change in the Education Act, but if financial reasons rendered it necessary the education system should be reduced to the three R's, the age raised from five to six years, and secondary education be provided for by education reserves. He thought the proposal to lease the railways a feeler thrown out by the proposed Middle party and strongly condemned the proposal. If Mr Ormond and that party got into power they would endeavor to further selfish ends by repeating direct taxation and reimposing the tea and sugar duties, &c. He believed that the Redistribution of Representation Bill would be carried next session. A unanimous vote of thanks and confidence was passed.
