ORMONDVILLE.

(from our own cobbespondent).

May 17, 1881. I saw it stated in the papers that Mr Gundrie had been elected chairman of the Ormondville school committee in the room of Mr McKnight. Will you allow me to say that Mr Gundrie is not recognised as the chairman by all the members of the committee. The facts are these: in the absence of a chairman Mr Gundrie was voted to the chair—for that night only — that the business before tbe meeting might be regularly transacted. One portion of the business was the election of a chairman for tbe remiander of the year. For this office there were two candidatesMessrs Barnes and Gundrie, but Mr Gutidrie's nomination was not seconded. There were six members of tbe committee present, and when the votes were taken there were three given for Mr Barnes, and two for Mr Gundrie, who thereupon gave his own vote for himself, and then his casting vote as chairman, and declared himself duly elected. It was then pointed out by the secretary, "that Mr Gundrie's nomination had not been seconded, but Mr Gundrie took no notice of such an objection, and retained his position. Mr Barnes considers that he himself is the legally elected chairman, and so there is a little storm in a tet-pot— two Richmonds in the field—and no one is. quite sure as to which is the right one.

There is to be a meeting to-morrow night to take steps to induce the Government to let the railway extension works in small contracts instead of tbe work, as is now the case, being done by day labor at 4s per diem The settlers also desire to get tbe railway freight lowered on firewood and timber, and to obtain if possible two trains daily from Makatoka. The township is also sadly in want of a telegraph office, and, in connection with the railway, communication by wire should be regarded by the Government as a necessity.
