COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONDAY, FEBEUARY 13. Present: Messrs Sutton (chairman), Kinross, J. N. Williams, Torr, Rymer, and Bennett. ACCOUNTS. The Council went into committee on the accounts for the month, which amounted . to £193 10s lOd. The payments it was stated, would leave £2058 l'2s 9d to the credit of the Council. The accounts were passed and ordered to be paid. MEMBEES OF THE HABBOUE BOARD. A letter was read from the secretary to the Harbour Board in reference to the election of two members to represent tbe Council en the Harbor Board. Mr Bennett moved, " that Mr J. N. Williams and Mr Kinross be re-elected." Seconded by Mr Rymer. Mr J. N. Williams moved, as an amendment, " that Messrs Sutton and Kinross be elected." Mr Sutton said his other engagements would not permit him to seek election. The amendment was not seconded, and the motion was declared carried. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr J. Ashton, refering to an obstruction in the Ngaruroro river. Resolved that the road overseer be instructed to see the obstruction removed. From the Wairoa County Council, forwarding copies of two petitions in refereuce to Waste Land Boards and landed endowments, which it was proposed to send to the House of Representatives. On the motion of Mr Kinross, it was resolved to postpone their consideration until the next meeting of the Council. From the Inspector of Slaughterhouses reporting that all the slaughterhouses in the district were in proper condition; also, that Mr Nelson, of Karamu, was slaughtering without a license. Mr TV illiams said this had been an oversight on the part of Mr Nelson a license was now taken out. Mr Bennett said, in reference to the butchers who had been prosecuted, tbat their grievance was that persons were allowed to compete with them without paying a license. He would oppose anyone getting a license who would aljow others not having a license to slaughter on their premises. The Chairman said it would be well in issuing licenses in tbe future to stipulate that no holder of a license should allow others to slaughter on his premises. It was resolved to refund tbe fines imposed upon Messrs Conroy, Martin, and Hollis, for slaughtering without a license. tareha's bridge road. The Chairman reported that the tender of Messrs Lawton and Pulford for metalling the Tareha's Bridge road had been accepted. The opinion of the Council's solicitor was read in reference to a bye-law regulating the weight of dray loads crossing bridges to the effect that the Council had no such bye-law and no authority to make one. to fastening boats to the Council* bridges, he said any boats so fastens, it they endangered the bridge, could be cut adrift. PAPAKURA ROAD. A letter was read from Mr Ackland why he bad not been paid the amount of his contract for this road, and complaining of the conduct of the road overseer. The Chairman said he thought Mr Ackland had been treated very liberally by the Council. He should have been charged £125 for being over contract time, but the penalty hid not been insisted on. Resolved that the application for further payment cannot be entertained. PETANE ROAD. Mr Torr asked why the road between the Petane school-house and Mr Carr's gate had not been metalled. The Chairman said the metalling bad been passed by the Council. It was resolved to proceed with the work forthwith. PETANE-WAIROA ROAD. Mr Torr gave notice that the piece of the Petane-Wairoa road just being formed should be metalled. Agreed to. REGISTRATION OP DOGS. It was resolved that Mr Tanner's motion in reference to the registration of dogs be postponed until next meeting. ) OliD TIMBER. Mr Rymer called attention to a lot of ■ old timber that was lying at the depot on the Ngaruroro, and suggested that it be divided into three lots and sold by auction. s' The Cbmrman said a part of the timber was suitable for culverts, and it would be better to give it to the different Road Boards who had use for it. Mr Bennett moved that the overseer be instructed to report at the next meeting of the Council the quantity and size of the timber lying at the depot. Agreed to. OMAHU AND KOROKIPO ROAD. Mr Bennett drew attention to the probable condition of this road during the coming winter. The road was good now, but last year it was impassable. It required metalling for about a mile and a half. He did not think the Council ought to do it without the assistance from non-ratepayers in the district. He would move that that the Chairman be requested to employ an interpreter and communiAcate with Renata "and other ndtives in the district and see what they would do towards the repair of the road. The motion was agreed to. Tbe Council then adjourned.
