THE AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN AT WANGANUI.

[by telegraph]

Wanganui, February 14

Play was resumed at noon on Saturday, the Australians continuing their second innings. Spofforth and M'Donnell went first to tbe wickets, the score standing at two wickets down for 18 runs. Robinson and Fulton opened the bowling, the former commencing, The first ball was a wide, and from the last ball M'Dannell got a hit to square leg for 2. However, in the next over Robinson sent down a Bhooter which took M'Donnel's middle stump, this being the first wicket clean bowled. (3 for 22.) The champion bat Murdoch filled the vacancy, and had played one to his credit, when Spofforth was well caught at long leg by Miller off Fulton, after having scored 9. (4 for 28.) Slight then loined Murdoch, and i soon after the latter obtained a 3, partly from an overthrow, off a ball hit to cover i point bard run for and mulled all round. After a single or two Parrington took Fulton's end with the bowling. Buns came slowly for a time, until Murdoch enlivened the field by a drive off Parring- - ton for 3, and a beautiful cut for the J same number off Robinson. A drive for two followed, and then Bayley took the trundling in Robinson's place, and from his first ball Slight was well caught by Jacomb at the wickets. Slight made a precisely similar score to tbat of yesterday, five singles. (5 for 53.) Jarvis succeeded and unluckily got a nasty crack in tbe face from the second ball bowled to him by Bayley. Four singles followed, and then Murdoch cut Parrington for 3 under the ropes, and Jarvis followed with a single off the same over. Murdoch hit a long skyer to square-leg off Parrington in the next over, but G. Bayley, who was io, the neighborhood, failed to get on terms'with it. F. Bayley's next over was treated in a precisely similar manner r M'Gregor then took the ball from m_V Parrington, and then Jarvis was caught Hr, at long-stop off M'Gregor by Wilson, after adding five singles to the score by careful play. (6 for 70.) Groube took his place, but soon lost his partner, who was well caught by Beresford at cover-point off Bayley, having scored a well-obtained 35, consisting of seven 3's, five 2's, and five singles. (7 for 73.) The vacancy >«r-' was filled by Alexander, but be was out for a duck's egg, having been caught by g : Cross in the slips oft M'Gregor. (8 for *'"' 73.) The last man, White then joined Groube, the Australians still playing one short in consequence of Blackham being disabled. After some steady play Groube was dropped at leg from a tall off M'Gregor. Bayley almost succeeded in equalling his feat of yesterday, as he bowled six maidens running. He was bowling excellently, but appeared however, to have somewhat reduced his pace. Finally he succeeded in taking the !a3t wicket, clean bowling Groube. White carried his bat out for 3. The innings closed at 2 p.m. for 83, making a grand total of 132, and leaving the local twentytwo 84 to tie or 85, to win.
