THE PR0POSED ATHENÆUM.

A fkw weeks ago we intimated that a number of plans had been received for the proposed Ath.in.uum in Shortlimd street, and that they had been referred to the committee appointed to examine and report upon thorn. There were ten plans in all sent in. for competition, and the report of the committee upon them is herewith subjoined : — " The judges award the first prize to the drawings marked ' Kido,' subject to the cost proving to be within the limit of the conditions. Tho second premium is due to the design marked ' E. R.' This shows somewhat leas accommodation than any of the others ; but it is certainly within the limit of cost, which it is doubtful if any of the otheis are. All the other plans, though possessing in many instances great meiit, hivo some defects so inaikcd that the judges could not recommend them for building, theiifoie they do not name them for )jk uiiuniB. They especially regret that they ai^ pi collided from eonsidciing the claims ot the drawings marked ' Ilope,' since the cobt of the fine building they repieaent would evidently he beyond the terms of the conditions. -- 'I'm o.
