J leit the Kopuru for Kaihu on the Sunday — Mr. Raynos stated, m his defence, that he did not know whether these men were travellers or not, also that when the}' and others came to hi.s house, especially if they had been drinking, it was almost impossible to make them go away without 1-tting them have something, and that he did all he could to avoid letting them have drink, but that he could not always succeed. — The Bench considered the charge pioved, as far as Adimson and Harrison were concerned, and fined the defendants £o and costs. A similar charge \va3 brought against Mr. Downing, of the Mangawhaie Hotel. —The Bench, after hearing several witnesses, found thab the charge was nolb^rao out by the iw-lence - - This concluded the business of the Court. My attention' has been called to a report of a meeting of the ""'Me Society "' (1 think), which appeared in last weeks paper, and, amongst things, it was mentioned that the .society's colporteur who recently visited this river met with opposition and hindrances. He may have in some place met with perhaps a little incivility or want of cordiality, but generally speaking, he ought to speak well of his treatment on this river (Northern Wairoa), for he was hospitably entertained at several houses to my knowledge ; was taken from place to place by the Rev. Mr. Baker und others : sold all his books, and, T believe, received a .subscription towards the f unda of the society. 1 should not have mentioned this matter, except by way of caution to those who may come again on a bimilar errand, and also because I have hoard persons expressing the'r annoyanc a^ perhaps, an i..oLti'd act of incivility (i! biK.lM>ecurrod) being un ju-itly iv<Iecte'l on the whole of the people an 1 tin district. - [O,vi oorrospuadent.]
