MAHURANGI.
Mr. O'Sullivan, Inspector of Schools, i8 on a tour of inspection in the North at present. He was occupied with the Warkworth School on Wednesday and Thursday last ; the fir«t day the School Committee were also present. There were 38 pupils in attendance ; the second day not ao many. Mr. O'Sullivan went minutely into all thebranches of education which the Board enjoins must bo taught, and I understand that after having made a few recommendations in one or two departments, he considered the school in a very efficient state. — The committee elected at Upper Matakana, for the purpose of carrying out the erection of the new hall to be erected in that district, are making rapid progress. The land, I am informed, is already conveyed, and Messrs. James Vipond and James Matthews are appointed trustees. Tender* for the timber are already called for. The contemplated size of the building is 50ft. x 20ft.— On Sunday ereuiug last, about 8 o'clock, a native of Levuka, named Josiah, in the employ of Mr. Thomas Scoll, «hipwriglit, of Maliurangi Heads, frrcutliod Ins last. He had been suffering for some tinio of disease of the brain. He was attended during his illness by Dr. G. L. Smith. He was interred on Monday in the burial ground attached to the Presbyterian Church, Mahurangi Heads. Some two years since the Messrs. Scott Brothers had two natives of Levuka consigned to them, and of whom they speak in the highest terms for cleanliness, honesty, and industry. Josiah became a general favourite with all who knew him ; was much respected, and deeply regretted. —A meeting was held in the Mahuraugi Hall on Monday morning, the 20th instant, for tho purpose of devising some moans of re-establishing Dr. Smith permanently in the district of Warkworth. The meeting was not well attended. A committeo was appointed, and a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. Meikle, Wilson, L. Thomson, and Sanderson, for the purpose of waiting on Dr. Smith to arrange matters.
