ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY

The monthly meeting of the Council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society was held in the Mmeum Buildings, Princes .street, at two o'clock yesteidav. Present :—Mi. J. Buitt (m the clun), Dr. J. L. Campbell, Mr. J. "Webster, .ind Mr. F. Cheeseman (s-cretary).—The Secret.\iy read the minutes of the last meeting, which were confiimed. Finance.—The Secretary read the monthly financial statement, which showed :—Receipts, £31 5s. (3d.; expenditme, £.~>8 2s. 8d.; balance in bank (including £100, fixed deposit), £117 DjVk. —The Secretary itated that two pair of Vnginian deer, grunted by the society to Mr. Moirin, had been libeiated in the Mnungakawa Raugei, where it was believed they would tlaive. Salmon.—The following letter was read by the Secretary : -'" Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, Chmtchurch, January 20, 187G. AVo shall be glad to receive an early roplr at a gentleman who thoioughly understands the tieatment of fish generally will be lea\ing New Zealand in a short timo for America, and we have no doubt but that with hia knowledge, and the facilities now available through the direct steamers, it would eventuate in a complete success, if entrusted to his charge. We are picpared to subscribe £300 towards it, and hope the other societies in New Zealand will do what they can to lecure so desirable an object.-I um, Lc, S. C. FAHR, Hon. Sec. Ho believed, however, that the society already had sufficient for experiment, without incurring further expense at present.—Mr. Webster said they might be suitable for such rivers tvs Waikato.—The Secretary said there were over a thousand of the fiah already in Auckland, and they sppeared to succeed very well The society would leceive ioiW irom game licensos, and with the balance now in hand it would be possible to spare about £150 towards the proposal of the Canterbury Society. —The Chairman said he questioned whether or not it would be worth while expending money on the proposal, especially as there was no. information to show that any experiment in a corresponding latitude had succeededL-The Secretary Raid it had been decided that tho society should obtain a further supply of salmon ova from San FrancUco, and be had accordingly wntten to Messrs. Cross and Co., and th« San Francisco Society on the subject, but had not yet received an answer.—Tho Chairman said, so far as the results of tho society went, they lwd been successful. The society had largely piofited by tho exertions of the Napier Society. --The Secretaiy said ho had received a letter from Mr. Oimond, of Napier, bating that he had sent for a second consignment.— Iho Chairman said the Auckland Society ought to make some acknowledgment of its obligation* to the Napier Society, and it would como with a better graoe if the Auckland Society made an acknowledgment unsolicited.—After some further discussion, the Secretary was instructed to leplytothe letter of the Canterbury Society, thanking them for their offer, and stating that in the meantime, tho Auckland Society had sufficient galmon ova to test its capabilities.— The Chairman said he would probably move at the next meeting that a sum of £50 be given to the Napier Society, as an acknowledgment of services readered. , .
