The s.s. St. Kilda is advertised to nail for Wangnnui on Monday next, sliould the we.ithei permit. The ichooner Echo entered outwards at the Custom*, yesterday, for Mercury Bay and Tauranga, with a cargo of bricks. The cutter Ellen reported At the Customs, yesterday, from Mariti, with a cargo of firewood. The achooner Kate McGregor cleared outw.irds at the Customs, yesterday, for Oamaru, with a large cargo of timber, &c. The Favourite cleared at the Customs, T^^Urday, for Russell, with a cargo of sundries. The brigantine Yarra entered outwards at the Customs, yesterday, fw GraJnsQfiQHai. _.in ballast. She has hauled into the stream, and Trill probably sail to-day. The Ellen, cutter, cleared out for Mariti, in ballast, yesterday, and will probably sail on Monday. The large shark which was caught the day before yesterday by Keene and Holbrook was on exhibition at the yard at the back of the Thames Hotel yesterday, and attracted a good many visitors. To-day the monster will be taken down the wharf and exhibited there, where, no doubt, many persons will take advantage of this opportunity of viewing the "maneater." Several vessels — intending competitors in the races to-day— were to be seen cruising about the harbour yesterday, trying how things went. The Jessie Henderson, in coming alongside the wharf, was rather too smart, and swung across the end of the wharf. Further than the removal of a little of the paint on her side, she was none the worse foi the mishap. The cutter Mercury, though only arriving late in the preceding night, was discharged, biaohed, and got ready for sea yeiterday with the greatest despatch. Her master considers bia chanoe of the large cutter race second to none. The s.c. Wellington leaves Onchunga for the South to-morrow. The Minnie Casey will steam to Mtihm angi on Thursday, on the occasion of the annual agricultural show at Warkworth. H.M.S. Sappho, which anived in the Manukau on Thursday afternoon, has received orders to proceed to New Caledonia at once, and was to leave with the first fair wind. The reason of her sudden despatch from the waters of the Mauukau is that intelligence has been received by the authorities that the French Government intend to assume po-ise-mon of the inlands known us the New Hebrides, sit unto between New Caledonia and Fiji. The Sappho does not godownin, all probability, topicvent annexation ahould it be contemplated, but to learn the intentions of the French Government and to keep a watch over their actio:.s in case necessity should compel Kugl.md's interference. It will thus bo apparent that the original intention of ft prolonged visit of the Sappho to the waters of the West Coast has been knocked on the head, much to the disappointment of aiany who wcie looking forwaid to what is quite a red letter day in the Manulcau, the appearance of one of H.M.'s ships of war. The yacht Centaur was advertised to h.ive been sold by Messrs. Cochrane and Son yesterday on the wharf, but a purchaser failed to come forward. She afterwards was piuchaied byprivate contract for £25. The s.s. Wellington arrived in tbe Manukau yesterday from Southern ports, with a number of passengers and a general cargo.

Port Chalmers, Friday. Sailed : Ladybird, s.«., for the North, with pauongeri. The Kev. Mr. Bruce is a paisenger.

A LoviKQ Captain.— The Port Darwin correspondent of the South Australian Advcrtuer furnishes tlie following .iccount of a, supposed attempt at double suicide by a Melbourne captain and a woman on b jard his bhip :— " Tho proceeding! of police courts aie public property, and as the subjects in the com t heie are the same, Captain John»ton, of the schooner Florinda, a late arrival fiom Melbourne, has be*n matter for gossip for iomo days. Ho appeared on the charge of attempting to commit ■uicidt ; but the proceedings went to show an Attempt to commit something moie — to t.iko with him to the other world a fair companion. It tfeeniad the captain had on board an engineer, who had a wife— a Mrs. Ramsey, and as she and the captain were much in one another's society, th« rough breast of the mariner was not proof against the tender passion. Prom the evidence it appeared that he had even gone so f»r m to avow his love, and to swear that he loted Mm. R. at he never loved woman ; but than, be sighed, there was an impediment. Shortly »f ter the arrival of tho uchooner in the harbour the captain and Mrs. It. went on shore t« risit Palmerstown, and whilt thero they •ajoyed theraselvei. In fact, the lady, in fiviog h»r erldenct, laid tjiat when they re

turned on board they were both slightly tho \vor«e for something. However, after they did return one of the crew, on going down into the cabin, found them sitting nearly asleep at the table, with their arms lovingly twined round one another, and an empty laudanum bottle alonguide of them. The police were sent for, and tho police sent for some one who could use a stomach-pump. The instrument happened to be used in time, and at last they both awoko on the stage from which they considered they had so romantically retired. One would have thought that the exhibition the captain made of himself would have been sufficient punishment, but the Bench, after hearing the case, committed him for trial at the next Circuit Court. In justice to the captain, it must be stated that when he came to consciousnens he very generously offered Kamsay, the woman's husband, a revolver, and requested him to blow out his (the captain's) brains, which Kamiay ungratefully declined to do."
