SECOND-SIGHT HUMBUG: HOW HELLER'S TRICKS ARE PERFORMED.

The professor affects all the grave airs of an Eastern sage, and even his ministering attendant regards him with awe. The wondertul young lady, Clara, the " Clairvoyante," is a shapely blonde, innocent eyes, nose slightly retrousse; her expression one of guileless simplicity ; her general demeanour that of a being accustomed to another and a better world, Clara then took her seat on the stage while the piofessor distributed slips of paper to the audience, with the request that each one should write down a certain number. It was understood that the professor should look at the number and interrogate the girl, who would give the correct answer by what he termed brain telegraphy, or the influence of his mind upon that of the girl. In order to understand this trick it will be necessary to give the key in the first place. It is 53 follows : — Fa^, our, 0 ; I want, 1 ; go, 2 ; can, 3 ; look, 4 ; quick, 5 ; please, 6 ; will you, 7 ; remember, 8 ; then, 9. By having a knowledge of this key it will be readily seen how "brain telegraphy" works, and how the wonderful Clara in enabled to give such surprisingly accurate answeis. The professor took up the first slip of paper, on \\ Inch was written, say, 2, 3, 6, 1, 4. He then asks the following questions, and received correct answers : — "Quick, Clara, and tell me how many figures this gentleman has written down ?" Answer — 3. Q. — Look and see the first figure to the right ? A. — I. Q. — I want to know the second figure ? A. — 1. Q. — Please t 11 me the third ? A. — 6. Can you tell me the fourth' A. — 3. Q. — Go and see what the last %me is ? A —2. Half-a-dozen of such tests as the above were given, and the answers w ere received by the audience with applause. The next trick was done with a pack of cards. The key for the number of npots on each card is the same. The key word for " ten " is " I want you to favour ;" " I want " being the key word for " one," and " favour " for 0. The suits are arranged in the following order:— Clubs first, spades second, hearts third, and diamonds fourth. The ace of diamonds was drawn from the pack. The question was asked, " Clara, look and see what the suit is." As "look" is the key word for 4, Clara knows that it is the fourth suit, or diamonds, and answers accordingly. "I want to know how many spots are on this card. "' "I want " being the key u ord for one, Clara, of course, answers " one ;" and so on, ad lnfimtum. The next trick was one similar to that performed in this city a few years ago by Heller and his "wonderful" young man " Willie." The key words for this trick are : Q.— What have J? A. — A watch. What have I in my hand? A.— A coin. Q. — I want to know what kind of a watch ? A.— Gold. Q.— What kind? A.— Silver. Q. — I want you to go and see the jewels. A. — 12. ["I want" being the key for 1, and " go " for 2 ] Q. —Jewels ? A. -13. If the coin were a gold one he would ask, " Quick, tell me how much it is ?" A. — Five dollars. ["Quick" being the kejr-word for "five." Q. — Will you tell me the date, quick? A. — 1875. *[" Will you "' the keyvoid for 7, and "qwk " for 5, thus making 75.] And so on ad nauseam The key for the next trick consists in the oider of the words " handkerchief, shawl, ring, hat, fan ear," &c. After a pau3e the professor takes a handkerchief from one of the audience, and, without being asked, she says, " Handkerchief." He next takes hold of a shawl, hat, fan, each in the prearranged order, and after thf* usual pause between each article, Clara gives the correct answer, and the audience applaud wildly. The spectators were then requested to ask questions mentally, and the professor went from one to another and wrote the answers on slips of paper which he handed around. The answers w ere singularly alike, and were so constructed as to fit the average questions propounded. They were— "I think so." "Perhaps" " I think you will" "Yes." "No.' One lady asked the question mentally, "Where is Charley ?" find the answer returned was, " 1 thmk you will."
