The dearth of shipping in the harbour at the present time makes the wharf bear a singularly deserted appearance, which, however, will probably be relieved by the presence of some ships now shortly due. As a rule, the harbour •uffers a good deal after Christmarf.by the vessels then in port for that festive leason taking their departure when the holidays are over. On Friday evening the officers of H.M.s. Sappho entertained a select few on board the vessel, where there were some amateur theatricals provided. A j>leasant evening was spent, and the number of fair ladies present greatly contrasted with the hostile appearance of the little vessel. The cutter Magic cleared out for Penrhyn Island, with sundries. The schooner Golden Isle entered at the Customs on Saturday, from llussell, with coal. The barquentine Emu is still laying alongside the hulk Cantero, discharging her cargo of coal, from Rusiell. The Elizabeth Con way, schooner, ariived from llussell on Saturday, with 80 tons nringancse. The cutter Mercury arrived from Tairua with a cm go of timber. The «.». Iona, from HuascU, arrived on Saturday morning with a number of passengers. The s.s. Taupo ai 1 i\ ed in the Mtinnk ui yesterday from Southern pot ts with seveial ]>as.-,cngcis and a cargo. She will leave again on Tucsd iv, carrying the out-going Suez and Australian inuil.t. The schooner Clyde is nniiounced to .s«».l tor Wangarei rmil Ma»s»pai to morrow forenoon. The s i. PhcoLo is advoi tlbcd to leave Onehuugti on Thursday nest. Mr. Quick iiiten<l-< inviting a select p.u ty of friends to a pleasure hip on board his new btpamer Quickstep o;i Wednesday ne\r, by which time the tlccointion and proviuoning of the vessel will have been completed. Arrival of the Brig Jaxc— The bug •Line, lf>!> tons, Olj.imberl.iiu, tiom Uoh.nt Town, su-rived in harbour yesterday morning. The following is a report of her passage : " Left on ihe 17fcli December, with Tight N. winds and variables, which continued for 12 or 33 days. Pilot boarded at 10 p.m., and worked up to port and anchored at 4 a.m. on Sunday, making the passage in 21 days." She brings a large cargo of jams, palings, posts, rails, and timber, La. THE INO.— This yacht, of about 8 tons, was launched on Siturday evening. She is 26ft. on keel, Oft. Gin. beam, Oft. Gin. depth, and 30ft. over all. She was built by Mr. Thomas Dalton and his four sons (Messrs. T. Dalton and Co. bootmakers), during spare hours and holidays for a period extending over the last 9 months, mule* the verandah of a house in Upper Queenstreet, near Mr. George Staines' premises. She Ins been admired by all the boat buildeis in Auckland, who seem to think she hai a fair chance of winning a prize in the forthcoming logatta on the 29th. The sails were made by Messrs. Waddell and Reynolds, from materials .supplied by Mes-srs. Anderson and Co., and she was caulke-1 in first-rate style by Mr. Wilson, and is a credit to all concerned. Steamer Building at tiik Thames — The keel of a new river steamer for Mr. Burningham, proprietor o£ the Pearl, was laid by Mr. R. Stone at hii shipbuilding yard, in Shortland, on Thursday. 8hc is to be built for speed, anil as the engines, wliich are now on the way from England for her, are of the most modem construction and of gieat comparative power, it is anticipated that a speed of at least eleven knoti will be attained. As a great part of the framework and other timbers for this new steamer are already prepared, and tbe work generally in a forward state, it will not be long before she will be ready for launching. The importance of the Thames Kiver trade is undoubtedly increaiing. We are informed that the Transit has changed owners, having been purchased for between £800 and £900, but she

will be kept on her preaant tiiide. It is also rumoured that the ' Effort' will be again placed on this tiade. Now that the piospects of Ohineimui me improved bo much, we Anticipate that thcie will be a brisk river ti.ule and lcmunerativc employment for all those steamers. — Tknnwi Ailvevtibcv.
