On' the 1st January two men, William Wells and Thomas Harry, stole from the Exchange Hotel, Kawakawa, one barrel of beer for which they received four months' imprisonment each with hard labour, and are going up to Auckland to day in charge of Captain Farquliar, of the s.s. 'Iona. 1 On the 31st ult. , James Conway, of the ' Elizabeth Conway,' of Auckland, was charged by Mrs. Vescy, of the ship ' Chili,' with criminally assaulting her in the Pacific Hotel, Russell. He has been tried here and committed to ake hid trial at the next Criminal Sittings of the Supreme Court. He is out on bail, self in £200— and two sureties in £100 each. [Correspondent January 7.]
