TELEGRAPHIC FAIRNESS DEFENDED.
To the Editor : Sir, — I was glad to observe in the Cross a leading article contradicting the statements made m ith reference to tlio telegraph department. It would, as you say, be exceedingly detrimental to an important branch of the public service if the calumnies on the subject of telegrams being tampered with, were not completely refuted. Mr. Lusk, at a meeting here a few nights ago, repeated these calumnies, stating that the Press telegrams were not trustworthy, *nd that the Government saw everyone of those telegrams, and did what they liked with them, or words to that effect. This strong statement was so remarkable that a gentleman present, I think Mr. Hay, on the conclusion of Mr. Lusk's speech, asked him if ho had not over-stated the case, and whether ho could prove that such an extraordinary state of things really existed, as it was a very serious matter. Mr. Lusk, in reply, said that not only was what he said true, but he could prove it, by means of a considerable number of witneses. Now, sir, what I have told you occurred ; and 1 can refer you to Mr. Hay and a dozen others, if necessary to prove tlio accuracy of my report. If Mr. Lusk thinks this conduct will secure his success in Franklin, he is very muoh mistaken. Mere abuse, when its malice is detected, Mill not not secure success, and does not deserve it. — I am, &c., JTaiupiay. [Wo have only to repeat that all such statements are wholly untrue. Their is not even the pretext of a foundation for them, and their reiteration deserves only con lornnation. Mr. Hay testifies to the substantial accuracy of ' ' Fairplay's " statement. — ICd.]
