Williams, for committing a brutal assault on his wife at Mercury Bay, by splitting her head with a tomahawk, was brought over today and lodged in jail hero. It is reported that a man was di owned at Mercury Bay yesterday.
[per press agency.] WELLINGTON, Friday. It is understood that Sir J. Vogel will not return at once to New Zealand after his arrival at Melbourne, but will go on to Sydney to confer with the (lovernment there as to the action to be taken by the two colonies, regarding the San Francisco mail contract and other matters.
