CHURCH OP ENGLAND PARNELL GRAMMAR SCHOOL.
The following i« tho repoiL of the Exiinr'ioi <if this School : — To the Trustees of tho Chinch of England Grammar School, Paraell : Gentlemen,—I beg to submit to you tho following u-jiort of the examination of the Chinch of England Grammar School, which wan conducted by me at your request. The papers which I not may be di' »ded under four subjects heads - Divinity, .English, Classics, anil Mathematics. I. Diti u it if: Tho fimt three papers which I gave onmc under this heading, and I regret that I can bestow very little praise upon the majority of tho answers which I received to those papors. Tho questions upon tho Acts and the Creed were somewhat better answcreil than those upon the Hook of Genesis, and I eonsuln the papers of S. H. Williams especially woi thy of mention. II. Enylinh: Nearly all tho papeis under tb ! 8 heading were exceedingly well done, especially thoso on Geography and tho English Language. The Ilutory questions woro not quito so accurately answered. III. Ctatutirs In Latin, Barstow, Fairburn, and Smith did good papors. The translations of Latin into Eng' ! sh were fairly done thioughout, but none of the boyi seemed to have any id . of translating English into Latin. Greek I not been taught at all this ye<u. IV. Mat mattes This subject is c 'dently well taught throughout the school. The papcii of JJarstow woro marked by great caie and accuracy. The remarks which I have made upon these subjects apply genera'iy thioughout the school, but esgccially to the First Di< Ision. The Second Di\ Ision did nob distingush itself in any subject. J.tinci did much tlio best papers throughout. I was voiy much pleased with what I saw of the Third Division. I mint especially mention the subject of Rea< i; ng, with which great pains has evidently been taken by tho Mnster. Some of the boys re.ul excellently, and some of them well. Tl» cio w.is a very close contest for the fust place in this Division, which has eventually been won by H. M.uinsel 1 . It. Maunsell is only tin oe marks behind, and Kisiling and E. Ad.mis are only separated by a few m.uks. On tho whole, I consider that tho boys have passed a veiy f.iir examination, «uul, with tlie e\ce]>tion of Dhinity and Latin, a very good one. I would venture to mgguxt that great 01 attontiou should bo paid to these subjects (Di\iuity ami Latin), and especially to Latm Prose. I am, kc, U S. Hissakd, M.A.
