Drunkenness. — John Jacques, Charles Nelson, John Hempcnstall, aiul James Spencer, were fined 5s. each anil costs, with the alternative of 24 hours' imprisonment with hard labour. Martin L'Estrange was fined 10s. and costs, with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment. John McCaukey was fined 20s. and costs. Charles Barnes forfeited his bail. Vuoanoy. — Eliza L'Estrange, an old offender, was fined £10 and costs, with alternative of three month's imprisonment with hard labour, for using obscene language in Karangahape Road on the 2Sth August. Assu'ltinu a CoNSTiBLR — rredenck Reeves and John Smith severally pleaded guilty to having been drunk and disorderly, and were fined 10s. and costs, with alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment with hard labour. They were then charged jointly with having violently assaulted Con■table Moar on Saturday the 2Sth instant. They pleaded not guilty. —lames William Moar, police constable, deposed that on Saturday between G and 7 o'clock, when passing along Queen-street, on his way home , he saw Smitu'iinging a song in the street, near the Greyhonnd Hotel. Reeves was holding his arm. Both prisoners pushed up against an elderly woman. Witness arrested Smith, and Reeves assaulted him. Witness was in uniform, but not on duty. H« got the two on to the ground, when they con. tinned striking witness. Smith kicked him also. The marks on his face were caused by the prisoners. After a while a civilian took Reeves off witneM, and assisted to convey him to the lock-up. Detective Jeffrey then carae to witness's assistance, and Smith was secured. During 15 minutes, though there was a large crowd round, no one offered the ■lightest assistance to witness.— The Bench : It was a shame.— William O'Brien, cabdriver, deposed to seeing the two prisoners singing and causing ft crowd in the street. (This witness confirmed the evidence of Constable Moar.) Witness ■nuted the constable. The men were drunk. — Percy Lipscombe, ion of Mr. Lipscombe, seedsman, witnessed the assault, and gave corroborative evidence.— Detective Jeffrey deposed to having, upon information received, gone to the assistance of Constable Moar. Reeves at once gave himself up, and told the detective not to be afraid ot him. There were at least 200 persons round Constable Moar, but not one offered to assist him. Witness had met a man.who was considerably the worse for liquor, bringing Smith to the lock-up. In witness s opinion, the amateur constable on this occasion was more drunk than his prisoner.— The Cour adionrned the case for an hour, for the attendance of the captain of the vessel to which they belonged.— At 12 o'clock, however, Inspector Broham stated that the

captain could not be found.— The Bench ultimately decided to remand the case until Tuesday (to-day), in order that an information might be laid, so that they could send the case to the Supremo Court. They considered that would be the proper course to pursue.— Inspector Broham expressed his concurrence with the view of the Bench, as the assault had been a most serious one. Lvk(f.s\. — William Hodson was charged with stealing a hat, worth 4s. Id., the property of S. and J. R. Vaile. — Constable Mulvillc deposed to having arrested the prisoner in consequence of intormation given to him by a Mr. Harris. Witness found the hat in a kit in the possession of prisoner. Hodson said it had been given to him by a young man on the "wharf.- — James Harris deposed to having watched the prisoner playing with the hat, and suspecting that he had stolen it, gave information to Constable Mulville. Half an hour later the constable had secured the prisoner Wonnold, in the employ of Messrs. Vaile, identified the hat produced aa •imikr to one which be had placed outside the shop. He believed it wa» the same hat. It had not been sold. The price on the ticket was 3s. lid.— The prisoner, in his defence, said that a man who was going on to the wharf asked him to take care of the hat, and said he would meet him near the Greyhound. He was walking leisurely up to the spot agreed upon, when Constable Mulville arrested him. Prisoner could not say what the man's name was, but he was always addressed as "Jack,'' nor could he say where the man was to be found. — Inspector Broham said that there was no previous conviction recorded against him, but the police reported him as a loafer, though by trade a painter. — He was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour. Lunacy.— Henry Pere (a Maori), was committed to the Asylum on the certificates of Drs. Kennedy and Hartmann.
