CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held yesterday iu the offices, Canada Buildings. Present: His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), and Councillors Daldy, Isaacs, Buchanan, Brett, Hurst and Cosgrave. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Link in Nelson -street. — A letter was read from Captain H. Burton on this subject, proposing to lay out a road from Hobson -street to Nelson-street. — The matter was considered, and £20 ordered to be expended on the work. Removal ok N((iirr-soiL. — Thomas Faultier, a contractor for the removal of nightsoil, wrote applying for leave to remove night-soil from the city one hour earlier. — It was resolved that permission be granted. SlTPRKMB Cot'RT SlTE.— Mr. V. E. Rice wrote, respecting the width of roadway in the old Supremo Court site. —The letter was received. Yousu Mens Christian Association. — Mr. F. G. Ewington, wrote, asking a remission of rates on account of this institution. — Councillor Hurst proposed, and Councillor Brett seconded, that the proposal could not be entertained. Freeman's Bay Road. — Mr. J. A. Tola requested information as to the proportion of cost to be borne by Ponsonby District for thin road. — Councillor Daldy understood the agreement- had been that Ponsonby should take up the expense of formation from the boundary. — It was resolved that the City Surveyor be requested to lay plans and specifications of the now road betoro the Council. City Obstructions.— Mr. Samuel Coombes wrote, complaiuing of the narrow passages left in front of buildings in course of erection iu Queeu-street. — Councillor Hurst thought better provision should be made. —The Town Clerk explained that it was customary t%, leave one-third, but the City Surveyor had latterly been able to mako better arrangements, except in the case now under consideration, where the pump interfered.—It was resolved that the attention of the City Surveyor be called to the matter. Sion-board. — Mr. Thomas Baruett asked permission to erect a sign-board in front of his verandah, in Queen-street. — The matter was referred to the City Surveyor. "Water-works.— The report of the Waterworks Committee was brought up and adopted.— It appeared that Mr. Motion had claimed the use of his water for the presen year, for the loss of which h« wanted £500 as compensation. — Councillor Hurat explained that the Council had offered £300, which had been accepted. — Councillor Daldy wanted information on the subject. He had not been in a position to inquire into the question himself. —Councillor Hurat said they had now the right to turn Mr. Motion out at any time.— The report was adopted. Kivance. — The following statement of accounts was read : — Accounts ordered to be paid : City Council account, £841 7s. 4d. ; endowment account, £G 5s. 3d. ; waterworks account, £500 ; total £747 12s. 7d. General accouut. Balance — Dr., £208 11s. 10d.; accounts ordered to be paid, £341 7s. 4d. total, £549 19a. 2d. Full width : Shorfland-street (north side), Victoria-street East to Highstreet, and other stroets so soon as kerbing and channelling shall have been completed. Kvroskne.— The Inspector under Dangerous Goods Act's report was read. He reported that he had visited the various bonded stores, and found them in a satisfactory condition. -The report was received. Municipal Offices. — The standing orders were suspended to consider this question, and Captain Daldy moved that the members present, with the exception of Councillor Isaacs be a Committee to deal with the question of Mnnicipal offices, with power to c t —Councillor Hnrst seconded and it was agreed to unanimously.— The Counoil then adjourned. ____^ mmmmmmm '
