Uniok Bbach.— The black reef « turning out good crushing staff, and expect a haul of specimens to-morrow. Tokatka.— A small quantity of picked stone taken from the stopes in the Siege level to-day. The Orange dinner is now on ; there is a large attendance. The sermon in aid of the Hospital, by the Rev. D. Bruce, realised a fair amount, and was successful.

THE SINKINO OP THE • RANGIRIRL' MERCER, Monday. The Waikato river steamer 'Rangiriri,' on her down trip, when about 5 miles Delow ltangiiiri, ran on a snag. Finding she could not long float, Captain Lindsay got her in 8 foot of water, where the now lies. No great difficulty is anticipated in raising her. Nobody is hurt. All the cargo it saved. The ' Bluenose has been taken off the passenger trade, and started for Hamilton and Cambridge this morning ; also the • Waipa,' for Ngaruawahia. There will be no passenger boat until the ' Waikato arrives from Onehunga, which is expected in about a fortnight. There will be no stoppage of the goods traffic. The 'Bluenose will run twice weekly from Mercer to Cambridge ; and ' Gymnotus,' from Ngaruawahia to Alexandra; and the ' Waipa,' from Mercer to Port Waikato. [PER PRESS AGKNCY]

ALEXANDRA, Monday. A tremendous south-west gale has been blowing to-day. The new public nail building, near completion, has jast been blown down, and is a complete wreck. This makes the second time the same building has come to grief. Fortunately the workmen were at dinner. No casualties to life have occurred. Native produce is coming in fast to-day. Eighteen canoes are now lying at the landing place. Tawhiao and party arrived yesterday, and are staying at Whareomohi, near Kopua. The weather is wet and cold.

HOKITIKA, Monday. f Two samples of coal obtained at Jackson a Bay, and taken to Wellington by the ( Superintendent, have been analysed by the , Government Analyst, who report* that the coal is a genuine bituminous coal, though

! of a rather inferior quality, owing to the per centage of ash being high. It would still prove to be very useful eo.il for general purposes. The samples sent are merely from the out-crop of the seam. A severe storm was experienced last night, but no damage was done to the^n^ ping. •* ▼ CHRISTCHITRCH, Monday./ The practice of placing atones on the rails of the Oxford branch railway has been very prevalent of late. On Saturday the enginedriver saw a boy about 12 yean old deliberately place a large stone on the rails as the train wm approaching. The driver stopped the train in time, chased the boy,caught him, and gave him in custody. The entries for the mid- winter agricultural ■how on Thursday next are 166 against 170 last year. DUNEDIN, Monday. The 'Easby ' has sailed for Newcastle with a full complement of passengers, and was obliged to refuse a good number both here and at Lyttelton, owing to the insufficient accommodation. The Bank of New South Wales shipped £120,000 in gold by her for Sydney. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court were opened to-day. There were only five cases to be tried. Frank Murray, for assault with intent to rob, was found guilty, and sentence was deferred.
