REMOVAL OF OUR OLD LAND MARKS.

To the Editor: Sir, — I observe the old court-home and gaol are about being removed, not before the time, for improvement*. I remember an incident in June 1842, in a ease of libel, Coat** v. \\. Shortlaud, Colonial Secretary. After evidence on both rides the jury was locked np in the gaoler** bedroom without furniture, except * waahhandstand, from 1 o'clock p.m. in charge of a policeman; it wai a very cold night, and uncomfortable lodgings without light or fire ; we longed for morning, when the Court MMmbled at 10 o'clock. The jury requested the foreman, Mr. Hogard, to tend word to the Chief Justice Martin to come into Court, when the foreman was asked if we had arrived at our verdict, but as there was not the least chance of that, we were ordered back to prison. We thought we had hard usage, but judge our surprise when we were uahered into one of the strong-rooms used for the vilest of the vile, and for the jurors a tub was put in the room for our use, but in .all that we did not arrive at a verdict ; and were at last discharged at 1 o'clock, having been locked up 24 hours. Such was the treatment of a jury of Englishmen in those stirring times. Oh, how altered is the treatment to jurors now. —I am, &c, J. G., One of the Jukv. P.S. Perhaps I have forestalled "G.T.C." in this.
