A GIRLS' REFORMATORY FOR AUCKLAND.

A mem inc, convened by cuculai, was held in the- Mechanics' Institute yesterday afternoon, hiH Worship tho Mayor in tho chair, to consider the practicability of establishing a(Jirls' Uefoimatory in Aucklaad. After some discussion the object was appro /ed of, and tho following committee of gentlemen was a^pointod, with a view to tvurying out the preliminary arrangoineDta and giving effect to the intentions of the meeting : — i The Ven. Aichdeacon Mauuaell , Major Beckham, lt.M., 1'. A. Philips, Emj ; H. II. Luak, Esij , tho Uev. 1{ F MacNicol; W. Karl, Ksej.; P. Broham, I'Jsq ; tho Ilov. It. Burrows, tho Kev. C. W. Kigg ; II. Ellis, Esij.; W. Kattray, Esq.; the Rev. Dr. Macdonald ; Joseph Wilson, Ksq ; I). Nolan, Esq.; the liov. W. C. Oliver ; with power to add to their number. A Ladies' Committee was also formed, with power to add to their number, including the following names : — Mrs. Cowie, Mra. Burrows, Mrs. Ma« Xicol, Mrs. (Jornford, Mrs. H. Ellis, Mrs. J. B. RushoII, Mrs S. Vailo, Mrs. Nolan, Mrs. It. Arthur, Mrs H. II Lawry, Mrs B. Tonka, Mrs. K L. Prime, Mrs. Dr. Walhs. The Kov. J\ II. Cornford consented to act in tho meantime an Honorary hociotary. It was stated at tho meeting that considerable) progress hud all cad y been inado by a fow ladies towards obtaining the mippott of tho public to tho proposed niHtitution. A nmnboi of influential gentlemou in tho city have become eithei donors 01 annual subHcriborR ; and tho L'toviiieml (Council, it is known, voted L2r)O Boine tune ngo, with a view to stimulating pnvato lirnevolenco in this direction. It it? behoved that the Provincial (Jovurnment will also grant a piece of land in a convenient locality, for tho erection of suitable pieinises It was agreed t<> request tho ladies who have already kindly taken an interest in tho proj)ORcd Reformiitoty to organise a system of honse-to-houHo collection, in order that the full support of tho public may be obtained. We understand it is intended to call a pu'ilio meeting by-and by, to give hnal tfloct to this truly benevolent and ptaisewoithy undertaking.
