RtfTURN OF THE POLAR STAR. — FEARFUL GALKS.— THIS SHIP MAKING OVttR TWO FEET OF WAT Kit AN HOUR. During yesterday a sail in sight was .signalled from the flagstaff on tho North Shore Slioitly before six o'clock the signal was altered to "a ship inside Tintiri Islaud " Amongat a largo numbor of persons interested m BhifpinK »*> waa belierod that the vessel would prove to be the ship Edinburgh Castle, 79 days out from London, Bhe being the only ship expected. Ihe vessel, however, proved to be tho American Hhip Polar Star, Captain Ntctaon, which left this poiton the 2tith of hist mouth, with a cargo of 1,100 tons gu.mo, .shipped by Messrs. Hundcibon and Macfarlane. The Polar Stai ninco her leaving tins port had encounleied a aenes of ternlic gales, during which she sprung a leak, and commenced to make water at the rate of over 2ft. an hour. f lho crew during tho continuanco of the storm had to bo kept incessantly pumping to prevent the ship from foundering. At one time, Captain Stetson, fully bolicving that it would bo impossible to keep tho ship ailoat longer, ordered the boatn to be got reaJy; but the gale slightly moderating, aud with the appe&ranco of better weather sotting in, these ordeis wero countermanded. The seaB during the gale continued to mako clean breaches over the Bhip, cairyingaway everything movable from the decks Immediately that the vessel was mado out last evening, Captain Burgess, Chief Harbourmaster, proceeded in tho pilot cutter to the ship, and boarded her off Tintiri shortly before 10 o'clock, and took chaige. The ship will in all probability reach the harbour during the course of this inonvng. Captain Stetson Spoaks very highly of the manner in which his officers and crew exerted themselves to save tho ship. The following report was kindly prepared for ua by Captain St'-tson : — Left Auckland on Febiuary 2G. On the night of the 27th encountered a lieice gale from the eastward, and which continued for three days. At midnight on the 28th, the ship being then about 2U0 miles off the New Zealand coast, tho gale feuddenly increased, and blew with terrible forcn, with a high cross sea running. The ship was immediately hove-to under closereefed lower maintopsail, and fore topmast staysail. At 1 a.m. a tiemendoua sea broke on board, tho ship at the samo time being thrown on her beam-ends: all tho live stock and everything movable were washed off the decks. Sounded the pumps and discoveied that tho ship had sprung a leak, and that there was over three feet of water in the hold. Called up all hands, and started them at the pumps. The men set to trork with a will, all hands) knoirin^ that it was either to keep pumping oi founder. After .'(3 hours' haid woik with all hands at tho pumps, succeeded in reducing tho water to 23m. The mi n weiocompl. tely worn out from the want of sleep, and from the effect of tho seas which weie constantly breaking over them. During the gale tho ship strained very much, and the cargo shifted to the port aide, giving htr a list till the covenng-boaid was under wat( r. As soon as tho gale moderated, from 15 to 20 tons of car^o were thrown overboard to got the ship upright. Made sail, the ship's head beiug turned for Auckland ; from thence light bafllincj winds prevailed, 'iho pumps have to be kept constantly going, tho ship making orer 2ft. of water per hour.

The Hero. — Mesais. Cruickshank and Co. roceivod a telegram fiom Melbourne yesterday atatiug that fcho s.s. Hero had been detained in Sydney, and that she would not sail for Auckland until the 3rd instant. She may, therefore, bo looked for about Sunday next. The schooner Tawera will leave for Poverty Bay to-day. The p a. Lady Bowon will leave for Mahurangi to-day. The schooner (Jharybdis will Had for Levukaon Monday next. The brig Tower Hill aaila for Whangaroa to-day. Tho s.«. P&tcrson left Taurancja at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon for this port. The ship Warwick took her departure for Lyttelton in ballast last evening. The barque Ayr sailed foi New Yoik at daylight yesterday morning. The s a. Southern Cross left Tauranga last evening for this port. Tho achoonor Merlin arrived in harbour this morning fro'ii Whangaro.a, bringing a, cargo of tmibor. The ship Polar Star was in company with tho barquo (Jlenhunt'y, henco bound foi London, on the 28th ultimo.
