THE PANORAMA.

There was a large attendance at the City Hall last night to witness the exhibition of Charles's splendid panorama of the Franco* Prussian war. The pictures, which are really magnificently executed, drew forth loud expressions of admiration, and the entertainment was agreeably varied by some very effective comic songs. Those who have not witnessed the panorama should not lose an opportunity of doing so iL they are desirous of a genuine treat.

ACCIDENTS.

As Mr. Hanley's gingerbeer cart was being driven, rapidly up Queen- andVictoria-streeta on Wednesday evening, it came in contact with * cab of Mr, Quick's. The driver of the cab was thrown out, and had his nose and face cut, but was not seriously hurt. The cab was considerably damaged, and will have to undergo a good deal of repair before it is set to rights. The danger of careless and rapid riding and driving along the streets has been frequently pointed out in our columns. Iu this particular case the driver of the cart had a narrow escape of being killed. — As will be seen by our account of the Masonic and Volunteer Engineer picnics, the steamers 'Enterprise No. 2' and 1 Jane' met with accidents. Beyond these and one or two slight cases of sunstroke, no casualties are recorded. ,

THE NIGHT.

The streets last night were thickly thronged, but the people were very quiet and orderly, After the performances at the various places of amusements had terminated the streets aoon became deserted, and by midnight thera was scarcely •jtvace left of the day's pleasure-making. *

BOXING-DAY AT THE THAMES.

I Oar correspondent writes :— Close holiday was kept here of course, andwjtere -was no lack of amusement to occupy the attention . of pleasure-seekers. Indeed, considering the number of our conomunity, there was rather ! 'a* plethora of sports j for who ever before (heard^'oLtwo regattas being held in one place in one day, and land sports besides ? As was only to be expected, the bias of the public ran in one direction, that being Tararu, where the sports were held. A.t an early hour in the forenoon the trains of the Grahamstown and Tararu Kail way Compauy, and 'bases, commenced running, and were liberally patronised, especially the trains,

String after string of , oars *nd open tracks crammed with passengers were dispatched, and by noon several thousand people, the - majority women; and children, had assembled on Tararu Flat and about the Elysium Gardens. The sports are to be distributed orer three days. The programme of the firstjtas well Arranged and carried ont, and inducted foot and horse-raoing, vaulting, jumping, tilting in the ring, throwing the hammer, and a wheelbarrow, race. Of the two regattas' the programme of 'that of G-rahamstown was the fuller of the two and most attractive. The arrangements made by the committee were also more convenient forjt-'the , public^ the steamer- <• Golden Crown' having been engaged as flagship, and was anchored within easy distance of the end of Grahamstown Wharf. Moreover, there was a greater stretch of water at Grahamstown, whicb was also in favour of that particular regatta. But as much as Grahamstown exceeds Shprtlandf or regatta-holding, so does Tararu exceed Grahamstown, and therefore it is to be hoped that this will be the last time such a confusion of site will be permitted to occur, and that next year Shortland and Grahamstown will sink petty local jealousies, and cordially unite and inaugurate a grand annual regatta of the Thames, to be holden at Tararu. To-day's racing commenced with a Waterman's Boat Race. — Entrance, 5s.; 1st prize, £5 ; 2nd, £2. It resulted as follows : — Fiery Cross, 1 ; Snowflake, 2 ; i Alabama, 3.
