THOUGHTS ON THINGS IN GENERAL.

Your correspondent, " A Man in the Fern," seems rattier irate at strong language being used by any other but him3elf, but he can fling about the term " asses" freely enough. This gentleman is evidently one who, according to Darwin, has descended from the donkey, and seems, by his own account, to have been brought up amongst doukeys in the south of London. I think, " A Donkey Among the Thistles," or "The Vicar of Bray," would be a better title to his letteia. But as I don't write for the edification of such animals, we will let the matter drop. Well, our Cattle Show and our Exhibition of Agricultural Implements and Appliances seems to have been a complete success this year, and this is a great encouragement to agricultural pursuits generally, and shows who are the real energetic and consistent breeders of pure cattle amongst us. Such men are a great good to us all, and should be highly esteemed as benefactors to the country of their adoption. — What regulates the price of flour ? Why should it rise £1 per ton now ? Of course there should be a relative price between wheat, flour, and bread ; but is there ? — There are remarkable coincidences even in these degenerate days. Was it not young Cnrtius, before immolating himself in the Forum chasm to save hi 3 country, that laid the foundation of the new temple to Diana? And did he not make use of his father's cash-box wherein to deposit underneath the ponderous stone extracts from the archives of tho day, with minutes of the preceding evening's debates in the Forum ? No doubt emulating his example our worthy Mayor discarded the customary bottle (as it might savour of P.8.), and made use of a Japanned cash-box. But what I want to know is this — was Oartius an ironmonger's apprentice, and what price was charged for the cash-box to the city fathers of that day —359 before ChristJ? A Man is the Bush.
