Naval Cai>etship. — Notice is given in a New Zealand Gazette, published on the 23rd August, that a naval cadetship will be o pen or competition within the colouy in 1874, and that all applications should be sent in to the Colonial Secretary on or before the Ist .Will select the best qualified candidate among the applicants according to the result of a cbmpetitiyo examination The subjects of examination, the condition of age, and all other necessary information, will be found in the Ifeto 'Zealand Gazette for 1870, pages 118,, 875, 409, and 614. The certificates of birth, sound health, <fee, required by the' Admiralty Regulations must accompany each Application. The brig Oberlin, from Newcastle, with a cargo of coals for the Gas Compauy, arrived itt harbour yesterday, after a good passage of 84 days. Captain Schmidt reports having sailed on tho 2nd instant, and for the first few days had N.E. winds, thence S.S.E. to S. till arrival. Passed the North Cape on Monday last. , , , The barque Mary Nelson arrived in harbour yesterday from Newcastle, with a cargo of j coals for Messrs. Henderson and Macfarlane. The barque left Newcastle on the Ist instant, j and has had line weather throughput. On discharge of her .cargo of coals the Mary Nelson will load > gum and flar for New ' York. , " The b.B. Alexandra took her departure for Sydney and Melbourne yesterday morning. The schooner Opotiki, from Opotiki, arrived io harbour yesterday, bringing a cargo of 11 casks pork, 4 casks bottles, 12 masks sundries. > '' % The s.s.
