In addition to four firsfc-ela9g full-powered steamers now building on the Clyde for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (two by Messrs. Caird, of Greenock, and two by Messrs. Denny Brothera, of Dumbarton), the company have just entered into a further contract with the latter firm for the construction of three similar vessels, and are also in treaty for another largo steamer now building in Scotland. These will be adapted in all respects for the requirements of the company's mail contracts, but at the same time are intended more especially for a direct line between England and China via the Suez Canal, for which service they will be well suited on account of their speed and large cargo capacity. A Scotchman recently paid a visit io Victoria, and took his passage home again in a ship which sailed a few days ago. Donald however was too late, and when he got to Sandridge pier the vessel was at anchor som6 hundred yards away. The boatman offered to take him off for a shilling, but ho refused to giro it, and coolly jumped into the sea, ■with the intention of swimming on board. The bystanders were horrified. Tho bay was rough, the day was cold, and the professor of economy was rather heavily clad. A boat put off to his rescue, and he was seized by the soruff of the neck and dragged to the gunwale. "You mean to charge mo a shilling for taking me off to the vessel V "We do, indeed," replied tho watermau. " Then 1 will not pay it ; let me go." As soon as Donald found himself free, he struck out towards the ship, and arrived there wet through of course, but apparently none the worse for his exploit. Whether it would not have been more economical to have paid the shilling, and to have saved his clothes, may be a matter of opinion.
