The mail steamship Nevada, from Honolulu, with the English mail, is due here to-day. The a.s. City of Adelaide, for Sydney and Melbourne, will take her departure to day at noon, or two hours after the arrival of the Nevada. The regular-trading barque Alice Cameron, Captain Carter, left .Sydney on the loth ultimo, and arrived here early yesterday morning. Tha North Cape was passed on Sunday last. Light baflling winds prevailed throughout the passage. The schooner Lady Darling, from Mol bourne, arrived ia harbour yesterday afternoon, bringing a full cargo of general merchandise. Light variable winds were exporienced throughout the passage. Tbe schooner Kenihvorth will sail for Samoa to-day. Ihe schooner Opotiki took her departure for Opotiki yesterday. The fine ship Caduceus, under the charge of Captain D. T. Roberts, arrived in harbour yesterday after a rather lengthened passage of abuub 10G days from London. The ship has however arrived in harbour a model of cleanlmes*. Iho passengers (in all 06) speak in the most glowiDg terms of tho very kind aud uuwearyiugattontion shown to them by Captain Roberts and Mrs. Roberts. The ship anchored oIF the powder ground. On discharge of her powder to-day she will come up harbour and take her berth at the wharf. On discharge of cargo she will commence to load again for home. Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Co. are agents for the ship. Captain Roberts kindly prepared the following report of the passage for us : —Left Gravesend on October 18th, Deal 20th ; discharged the pilot off Start Point, October 24th. October 25th spoke the barque Fugitive, from London to Launceston,in latitude 4912, longitude 6'lo. November 7th passed Madeira, and during the interval experienced a series of westerly gales with heavy seas, which continued to the Bth of November in 30 N , when fair weather set in. Moderate N.E. trades were experienced, and the equator was crossed ou November 22nd in 27 W. Had good S.E. trades to the island of Trinidad, which wa3 sighted on November 29th. December Ist signalled the barque Cauopus, from London for the Persian Gulf, 40 days out, latitude 24-15 S., longitude 2837 W. ; also at the same tune the ship Comorin, from Liverpool to Calcutta, 39 days out. Passed the meridian of Greenwioh December 16tb, and the meridian of the Cape December 20th, in latitude 41 "42 is. ; running eastward between 44 and 45 S., mostly with modeiate breezes and fine weather. January 13th, passed the meridian ; of the west end of Australia with fair weather until January 17th, when a heavy gale from N. to \V. and S., with furious squalls and a heavy sea, was experienced. On the 20th passed the meridian of South Cape of Tasmania in latitude 4595. On the 21st encountered thick foggy weather, winds from E.N.E. and N.N. W., which increased to a heavy gale from that point ; brought the ship to the wind under lower topsails, &c, until ■ 4 p.m. on tho 22nd, -when the wind got to ' S. W., and sail was again made in a course shaped for tho Three Kings. A. very heavy confused sea still running, which continued till the 23rd, when the wind moderated and drew to the S.E , E., and N. E., which continued until the 2Gth. On the 27th, 10 pm , latitude 38-33 S., longitude IG3 35 E., passed a barque going to the southward ; wind then N. VV. Onthe29th, 6.30 p.m., made Cape Maria Van Dtomen, 97 days from the Start. The North (J.ipe was passed the next day at 9.30 a m , an. l Cape Brett at 9 p m. on the 3 1st, aud a lure-aiid-att schooner went iiito thu Bay of Islands at sunset On February Ist, passed Poor Knights at 4 a. m , Little Barrier at 4 p. in , Tin at 11 p m. ; expeiienced vcrv light winds on the coast. Ilova to at 11.10, Tni W. by N. 34 miles, till daylight yesterday morning, when Tin bore S. 4 miles ; boat up towards tl.e harbour, and ancho:ed off the I owdur ground at 3p m. yes'erday. The Caduceus brings 1 shoithom bull and cow, and 4 r.vms, all of whiph.arein excellent condition ; also 2 Tragopan pheasants, and S7 small birds, viz , 3 robins, 5 hedge sparrows, 31 goldfinches, and 4Syellowhammers, for the Acclimatisation Society ; also 2 case 3 of plants. Captain Roberts has brought his feathery passen.ers into poit in excellent ordei and condition. A very flattering testimonial signed by all the passengers was presented to Captain Roberts by his passengers, and was suitably replied to. JKaipaiia Harbour and its Pilots. —To j the Editor: Sir, — To say that we as a people, residents of Kaipara, simply express astonishment at the conduct of our Proym- j clal Government, by entrusting a second time tho pilotage services of this important haibour to an utter stranger, were to draw it exceedingly mild. It is not simply astonishment, but indignation at what wo may presume to call one-eyed folly of those provincial rulers who pretend to have tho interest of its people at heart. Now, sir, it would be presumptuous on my part toaddressaletter to a public pappr unless I could advance some sound reasoning with it. This I shall endeavour to do. I believe, sir, when I assert that a pilot on the English coast is not allowed to take charge of any vessel -'P^ess he has previously served a term of apprenticeship, and holds a master's certificate, 1 do no more than assert the tiuth. And is it uot right that it should be so — not only for the safety of the vessel, but also for the safely of the valuable lives she may have on board? In England it is not merely " the man with a certificate " that is wanted, but tho man with the experience and practical knowledge of tho place which he undertakes to pilot for. In the province of Auckland, it cer- j taiuly seems to be that a certificated person is j a qualified one. la this true, sir ? Verily, ' we have only to look at the charred bones of the once favourite Midge, to stamp it as a direct falsehood. Wherefore do we need a man who holds a certificate for nay*"*:" 6 the globe, when. ."* j- ~}~»* H*^** 1 ™ fcl ? afc -- . JPjuired ? Would a shipload of certificates help a man in navigating th 6 rivers of the Kaipara, where the banks are numberless and continually changing t Verily not. Then this fact alone proves that the man with the practical knowledge of the Kaipara harbour is the man to hold the important position of pilo*., and would be "the right man in the right place." Wa3 not such a man asi this to be found among the many applicants for tho situation there were, andwho3e application was well marked by the signatures of those who had every confidence in his ability— say nothing of his being born in the district of Kaipara, and his life being spent upon the boaom of its waters ? I have not the least hesitation in saying that Mr. William Stanaway would have been the man for the Kaipara pilot. I suppose the difficulty will be surmounted in much the same way as with the late pilot, namely, by sending Mb own men— who were fully acquainted with the harbour— to pilot strange vessels to their destination— thus proving that those who held situations as pilot's boatmen were .more qualified for tbe situation of pilot than that nil-important personage himself. —I 'km, &c," DEFEtfbBR of the .Right.

C. H. Lowe offers a challenge to T. Skilly to run him five miles for £5 aside, on Monday next, at the Albert Barracki.
