FLAT ROCK BEACON.

A short time ago tenders were called for the erection of a beacon on the Flat Rock in the Rangitoto Channel, in place of tbe iron beacon lately washed away. The structure is to be of solid stonework, l*id in unmixed Portland cement, 18ft. diameter at the base, and 25ft. high. This will be surmounted by an iron staff audcAge, the top of which is to be 40ft. above the level of the rock. The structure was originally designed by Mr. J. Stewart, C.8., but several details have beeu altered by Mr Blackett, the Colonial Marine Engineei\ 'I he tenders received were four in number : —Mr. A. Watson, £2,300 ; Mr. C. Hawkswood, £1,950 ; Messrs. Fraser and Tinne, £1,084 Bs. ; and Mr. William Cameron, £1 084. Of conrße Mr. Cameron got the contract. Nine months are allowed to complete the work iv.
