BIRTHS. MARRIAGES. AND DEATHS, DURING JANUARY.

We give below the registration statistics ot Auckland for last month, and notice with regret the great mortality whioh they reveal. There were no leas than 65 deaths — the largest number that has been chronicled in any month for a rery long time past. The number of births registered was only 104, which is considerably under the average. It is usually considered a healthy indication when the births bear the proportion of three to one death, but it will be observed that in Auckland last month there were not even two births to one death. When we examine the ages of those who die a still more serious stafca of affairs is revealed. It will be seen that 38 children under the age of one year died last month ; or, in other words, that more than one child out of every three that is born dies before it has lived a year. But this is not all, for 11 are registered as having died between the ages of one and two, and 4 between two and five years. This gives a total of 53 —rather over one- • half of the total number of births. So that, I if we take the statistics of January as fairly representing the regular proportion of infant mortality, we find that one-half of the children who are born here die before they are five years of age. This is really an alarming state of affairs, and should be inquired into. We give below the causes of death, and also the localities in which the variouafcases occurred, so that there are reliable data upon which medical gentlemen can base an opinion of the cause, with a vipw to romodying if possible th« evil.
