Yesterday the appearance of the water flowing from the different stand pipes in the city was vastly improved. As announced in a previous issue, the water being pumped from Messrs. Seccombes well is made to flow directly into the pipes leading to the city, and not through the ponds in the Domain. There is, therefore, no trouble in filtering the water, and the result is that beautifully clear water is delivered in the city. Mr. Allright has taken ample care to have the water measured as it Hows from Messrs. Seccombes tank, by causing it to pass through a water meter. This temporary supply ought not to cause the City Council or others to relax their efforts in providing, without a day's needless delay, an ample supply for the city, for the supply from the brewery is not only limited, "but costly. In the event of 50,000 gallons being supplied from this source daily, 2e. per 1,000 gallons is a daily charge of £5, or £1,825 per annum, for the price of the water alone, not allowing anything for breakages, attendance, <!bc. Were the full supply which the city would require— at least 600,000 gallons per diem — provided at this price, it would represent an expenditure of £21,900 for the price of the water alone. It should be remembered that the waterworks in the Domain were constructed with borrowed money, for which the whole province is liable. In many districts in the province the settlers have at the present time to cart their supply of water a distance of several miles, and the Provincial Government may find themselves noc justified in long continuing to pay out of the provincial revenue ssch a large sum for water for the use of the inhabitants in the city only, while the inhabitants in the other parts of the province, together with their flocks and herds, are equally suffering from a want of the necessary element — water.
