THE LADIES' WORKTABLE. FANCY KNITTING STITCH.
This stitch h suitable for antimacassars, bread cloths &c. ; the aize of the needles and cotton must depend on the purpose for which tho woik is vec£iihccl. Cast on any number of stitche9 that will divide by 11 (according to the width wanted), and add 2 otitcb.es at each end to make a firia, straight edge, on which to bcw fringe or a knitted border ; these edge stitches must always be knitted plain, and the first of every row taken off without knitting ; they are not included in the pattern. After casting on, do a plain and a purl row, and then commence the fancy stitch as follows :—: — Ist row : Thread forward, 3 plain, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 2 together, 3 plain, forward, 1 plain, r«peat. 2nd, and every alternate row, purl. 3rd and sth rows as Ist. 7th row : 1 plain, * forward, 2 plain, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch *yer, knit 2 together, 2 plain, forward, 3 plain, repeat from * ; at the end of row 2 plain, insteaU of 3 plain, before the edge stitches. 9bh row : 2 plain, * forward, 1 plain, slip 1, knit I, pass slipped atitch over, knit 2 together, 1 plain, forward, 5 plain, repeat rom * ; at the end 3 plain, instead of 5 plain. 11th row : 3 plain, * forward, alip 1, knife 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 2 together, forward, 7 plain, repeat from * at the end 4 plain, instead of 7 plain. 13fch row t 4 plain, forward, slip 1, knit 1, pa 33 slipped stitoh over, forward, 3 plain, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitoh over ; repeat. 15th row : Knit 2 together, 3 plain, forward, 1 plain, forward, 3 plain, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitoh over ; repeat. 17th and 19th rows : Same as Isth. 21si> row : Knit 2 together, 2 plain, forward, 3 plain, forward, 2 plain, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over ; repeat. 23rd row : Knit 2 together, 1 plain, forward, 5 plain, forward, 1 plain, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over ; repeat. 25th row : Knit 2 together, forward, 7 plain, forward, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped Btitch over, repeat. 27th row : Knit 1 with the last of edge stitches, * forward, 3 plain, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, 4 plain, forward, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, repeat from * ; at the end, 1 plain instead of slip 1, &c. Commence again at Ist row. Eor any purpose that would render ib desirable, this pattern can also be knitted on 4 needles (leaving out, of course, the edge stitches), the only difference being that ( tha alternate rows must then be plain instead of purl, and in the 27th row it will be found necessary to pass the Ist stitch without knitting it to the right-hand needle before commencing, and leave it there, knitting it at the end of row to pass the slipped stitch over. In like manner, at the end of each needle, 1 stitch must be taken from the next, to enable the stitch to be knitted, over which the slipped one is passed.
