A PLEA FOR THE FALLEN.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — At last the social evil ig staring ua in the face, and week after week are unfortunate girls, some mere children, brought before our Police Court, to be punished for their own or the sins of others. Is it not pitiful to see a mother imploring Jtid^e Beckham to savo her children from their evil courses, ami girls of the ages of IG aud 13 years, sisters, charged as common prostitutes; while our worthy Magistrate, although deeply deploring the evil, can afford no remedy other than committing these poor girls to prisim, to come out therefrom more hardened than before to resume their horrible occupations ; for they have lost caste, have no means of recovering it, yet cannot starve ? Auckland is said to have a larger amount of this evil existm 60 in her midst than any other "town in Ne Zealand— through her liaviug been a garrison town, and therefore so much the more does the necessity devolve upon us to provide a remedy if we wish to retain our status as a civilised coin ma tut/. Mrs. Colclough has stated that there arc ladies who wiirundertako the work of starting a reformatory for the f.illen : if £100 ia subscribed towards a fniul fur that purpose, this would enable them to commence operations at ouce. Judg> iutc from the past the people of Auckland are not backward in responding to an appeal to their sympathies, and I feel assured that this will not be made in vain. A movement of this kind in England is not generally confined to ladies— ministers and Christian men ace found takm^ an active part therein ; and I would suggest that a committee be at once formed, and subscription lists be drawn up for the purpose of obtaining funds necessary to rescue our fallen sisters from their present state of aiu and degradation. I enclose a subscription of £5 as a commencement of such a fund. — I am, &c, Rescue.

TO THE EDITOB. Sir, — The suggestions of your various cor. respondents aboub the reclaiming of fallen girls are good, so far as they go ; but to prevent the evil would surely be better. Why are the girls to be pitied and then punished—and not far rather the men who help them to sin, but who yet go unbiamed, unnoted, and who are even received in so« called society, because their deeds, being deeds of darkness, are hid from the light of day and veiled from the, pur,e eyes ,of their wives and sisters ? < I do not exactly know the powers of the police, but could they not havo authority to enter all inspected houses,' any night, at any ; hour, take note of the men found there, and j have these men brought up the next day to \ the Police Court ? Perhaps some of tfyem for very shame might cease to demoralise our city, in their cowardice dreading to bear the brand of infamy. To my mind, no moral punishment can be too severe for the base, cowardly fellow who for the gratification of Ms own selfish nature ruins a girl, n»ver caring iv the -least what degradation falls upon her, so long as he goes free, — I am, &c, , i „ Woman.
