MEETING OF THE RESIDENTS AT THE NORTH SHORE.

Ix compliance with advertisement, a meeting of the jatepayera of the Devouport HighwayDistrict was held on Thursday evening at the Flagstaff Hotel, "to take into consideration the course adopted by the late Board in prosecuting Mr. Allison, by an indictment in the Supreme Court for an alleged encroachment upon the public road." The meeting had been convened by tte Chairman of the lload Board, in compliance with the requisition of some 30 ratepayers. About 50 persons were present, and, a number of otheia having declined presiding, Mr. Maya was by acclamation voted to the chair. — Mr. Leggett moved, "That, in the opinion of this meeting, the late trustees are deserving of censuie for the action taken by them in the prosecution of Mr. Allison ; and Messrs. Leek, Niccol, Lewis, and Holmeo (trustees of the present Board) are deserving of thanks for settling the said action, and saving the ratepayers from further unnecessary expense." — Mr. A. Goldie seconded the motion, — The t)hairman pointed out the absurdity of the motion, and ita contradictory assertions, inasmuch as it both censured aud thanked Mr. Lewis, who was a member of the late Board as well as the present. He gave it as his opinion that the action against Allisou was not brought iv malice, but in the interest of the ratepayers. —The motion was then put and rejected, only Messrs. Leggett, Goldie, Duder, Allison, and William Duder voting for it. The motion was then divided, and the part censuring tKe late Board met with only the same support, -while the latter part, thanking the present Board for settling the action, was carried. — Mr. Allison then moved, < "That this meeting deeply sympathises with him (Mr. AlliBon) in the malicious prosecution to which he has been subjected, and agrees to pay his costs out of the rates."— No one seconding this, the motion lapsed. — Mr. Crombie moved, "That Mr. Mays retain the chair whilst other matters are discussed affecting the-welfareof the district.
