HAMILTON: THE MECHANICS' INSTITUTE.
Ax a meeting of subscribers to the Mechanics' Ihstitute, held on the 26th ulfc. in the Court-house, for the purpose of receiving the report of the provisional committee, and appointing a permanent committed, &c, the name was altered to Hamilton Institute, and the following gentlemen were elected a permanent committee : — Colonel Ly«n, president ; Yen. Archdeacon Pritt, vice-presi-dent; W. N. Searancke, Esq., treasurer; G. Edgecombe, Esq., secretary ; S. Tanfield, librarian ; G. Smith and J. Martin, Esqs., being members ex officio, It was reselved that periodicals be ordered, and the readingroom opened as early as possible. Considerable amusement was created here on Saturday by the appearance of a notice in thft birth column of your contemporary, to the effect that the wife of P. McGovern had been confined of a daughter stillborn, the said F. McGovern being a most exemplary bachelor, who of course fired up, and vented his virtuous indignation in no very measured terms on the supposed foul practical joker; but no clue has yet been obtained to trace it to the actual perpetrator. The Highway Boards here are busy preparing their statements, to be laid before their constituents some time this month, when their successors are to be appointed — a great benefit to the out-districts, as the boards will be able to get into proper working order before the dry season, and devote their attention to road-making at that time, instead of, as heretofore, being forced, for want of funds, to do it at the beginning of winter ; ' and the earth not having time to consolidate before the wet weather comes on, they become almost impassable. For this, alteration in the time of election the thanks of the settlers in the province are due to our present Superintendent. It is curious to notice the difference that a river 100 yards wide makes in the estimation of the honour of being a member of the Board, one side having the greatest difficulty in getting gentlemen to serve, while on the other the members hold office term after term with a tenacity only equalled by the late City Board: but on dit that strenuous exertions are being made to oust them this term. The weather during the past week has been very stormy and wet, almost putting a stop to out-door occupations. — [A Correspondent.]
