ORNAMENTAL AND USEFUL.
TO THE EDITOR. Dear Sir, — It waa only thia morning I read your report of the meeting of the Prince Alfred Troop Cavalry Volunteers, on the 6th instant, when Mr. C. A. Calvert, Veterinary - Surgeon, was unanimously elected commanding officer; and that gentleman, in a very proper thankful spirit, in return for the compliment stated that, in addition to bis duties, "he would always give his professional services gratis to all horses used, by the membeis on the parades." Sir, this is a truly brilliant idea, and only w;ants working out far enough to result in profit to all concerned. I would suggest, having got so far, that the troop now turn out their other officers and elect in their stead as lieutenant a bootmaker, who will undertake to make the troopers' boots for nothing ; let the cornet be a tailor, and the sergeantmajor a provision-dealer, &c. Why, the arrangement is beautiful in its simplicity — and all for the honour of the thing ! On these tejrms I will organise a troop at once, and constitute myself paymaster — I can invest the money subscribed by troopers and the Government allowance so profitably for all joining. Please receive names of intending members for yours, Snaffle.
