POLICE COURT.-Tuesday. [Before Thomas Beckham, Esq., R.M.]
; The Goat, Nuisance. —William Bowden, for allowing a goat to stray about iv a public place/ was fined ss. and costs, j Alleged Smuggling. — Prank Antonie was charged with a breach of the Customs Regulations Act by landing from the schooner f Leonidas' certain quantities of tobacco, with intent to defraud her Majesty's Customs, by pot paying duty upon the same. — Mr. Joy appeared for the defendant, and ou his application the consideration of the case was adjourned until Thursday next. — Defendant was admitted to bail in two sureties in £75 each, and himself in £150. Alleged Vagrancy. — William Barton was charged with having imposed upon J. L. D'Albayhad, and obtained from him certain clothing by means of a false representation. — Mr. Broham conducted the prosecution, andcalled John Lethbridge D'Albayhad, clerk in the Bank of New South Wales, who deposed that the prisoner came to his residence at Dedwood on the 6th June, and said he was iv very indigent circumstances. In consequence of his representations witness kept the prisoner'for about a fortnight, and at the end of that time he told witness that if he had clothing he could obtain employment, as he had been offered a situation on that condition. Witness gave him an order for clothing on Mr. Rattray, to the extent of £7, and also £1 in cash. Witness said prisoner seemed not only to be an honest man> but also a good Christian, and that he was an adept at quoting Scripture.— [His Worship : Don't you know that the devil cau do that with great facility to suit his own purpose?] — From information he afterwards received, witness placed the case in the hands of the police, when, the pi'isoner was arrested. — His Worship said the evidence in the case was not strong enough for a conviction, as the clothing had been given to the prisoner. The case must be dismissed. Another case against the same individual fras withdrawn by the police.
