DIABOLICAL OUTRAGE. The Cornwall Chronicle says :— " A most diabolical outrage was perpetrated last evening on the Launceston and Western Railway, when some dastardly fiend attempted to throw the train off the rails at the'big embankment near Tytler's, ten miles six chains from town. On the up-train, due at Launceston at 6. 10, reaching the point indicated, the engine dam© into violent collision with some impediment, sustaining a double shock, and being so seriously damaged-that it could not proceed. On the train being stopped, it was discovered that a heavy telegraph* post had been placed across the rails and backed up with ballast in a very substantial manner. Fortunately it was caught by the guards or cow-catchers in front of the engine, which threw it end on, and the engine passed over it, tearing away part of the break gear, and sustaining other damage. The obstruction must have been placed on the rails betw«en five o'clock and half-past, and was so fixed as to render' almost certain the diabolical end aimed at. Indeed, it ia the 1 greatest marvel that' the' train, which was full of passengers, was not precipitated down the, big bank."*— A Launceston correspondent subsequently telegraphed as follows :— " When tke collision took place the gear of the brake of the enginewas so injured that, though the steam was shut off as soon as the obstacle placed, in the lino was passed ovsr, the train ran on for six miles down the incline till it came,to the rise on the Launceston side of St., Leonards station. At present it is not quite certain whethw thf ttlegraph pole which caused the accident was. thrown across, the rails', by' design or accident j but there is "mson to believe that it was accidental.", ; , v
