THE CITY OF AUCKi AND. Yesterday a numerous gang of men were kept hard at the pumps on board the ship City of Auckland. In the morning an attempt was made to float her, but without success, the pumps eing unable to discharge the water quick enough. *bout midday a centrifugal pump of 3£in. diameter was taken on board by the p.s. Devonport, i^teaui was at once got up, and at about 6 o'clock this pump and the ship's pumps were got to work. The flood tide had, by tin's time, begun to make, anc^ 9,9 ii rose % it beoanie apparent that the large pump was doing its work weft anh surely. t about half-tide the ship's stern "was found 111 1 be afloat, warpa were at once got out, and the vessel hauled round into her origiual position, the centrifugal pump all this tune working excellently and discharging the water at the rate of about one foot per hour. Shortly after the ship floated fore and aft; fresh warps weie run out to the wharf ; and a out 10 o'clock, under the directions of Captain Burgess and Captain Ashby, the good ship was again moored securely in her old berth at the Queen-street Wharf. It was expected last mgh 1 ; that the ship would be pumped dry by about two and three o'clock this morning. Steps will be immediately taken to get the cargo discharged, and the necessary repaiis to the hull of the ship executed. A considerable amount of credit is due to Messrs. JSiccol and Sons for the energetic manner in which they fulfilled their contract. The Santiago for Napier, and the ship Timaru for London, are both awaiting a change of wind to pioceed on their voyages. The s.s. Taranaki, from Southern ports, is due in the Manukau to-morrow. The s.s. Go-ahead was to have left Napier for the Thames, with a cargo of cattle, on the 25th. The Reuaita.— Sir,— In looking over the list of events for next Monday's Regatta, I in as rather astonished to see that the same course has been appointed for the amateurs as for the all comers' four-oared race in gigs, and that the distance can hardly be less than four miles, which is about the extent of the course rowed annually by the Daik and Li,4ht Blues of the old country. Tlr<re the race is towed in eight-oared r«iejng\>DjAs e>i l\ie verjs ' lightest build ; and the crews are subjected to a moat severe training for fully two months previous. Her* the crew 3 are only fouroared, and row in gigs, not wager- boats ; and most of them, having daily occupations, cannot be expected to train so thoroughly. A two-mile course would make a good race, and one worth seeing. Let me urge the Regatta Committee, if not too late, to alter the course, say, to once round for the amateurs 1 race. Experto crede. — 1 am, dc, Bow. Vested Eights. — We, the undersigned inhabitants of Frejman's Bay, conbider that this distnetis shamefully used by the liegatta Committee this year in their proposal to do away with the flag-boat usually moored off this bay for the rowing races to go round. We, and the other inhabitants of j thw neighbourhood, and also the inhabitants ' of Dedwood, have subscribed our money on the strength of the usual course being adopted On* very influential city gentlemau, who lives in. Franklin Road, said this ©yen ne that if his gu nea subscription is not paid n» vili stop its payment). We hope our catting attention to this niabber will be the cause of reinstating the boat. If ifc does not, we feel sure future regattas will suffer in consequence, as it ia a gteat injustice to the residents west of the wharf. — Joseph Slater, F. Jagger, J. Billington, John Xape, Samuel Jagger.
