NEW ZEALAND INSURANCE COMPANY.

The half-yearly meeting of the New Zealand Insurance (Company was held on December 23. Mr. Thomas Russell occupied the chair. The Secretary read the advertisement calling the meeting, also the minutes of the former meeting, which wer.e confirmed. The Chairman said the next business before the meeting was the election of two directors to fill the vacancies occasioned by the retirement of Messrs. Williamson and Browning, who retired by rotation. He had much pleasure in moving their re-election. The motion was unanimously agreed to. A vote of thanks to the directors and officebearers was passed. The meeting then separated.

MASONIC.

On December 29 (St. John's Day), at high noon, the Lodge Era held a meeting at the Masouic Hotel, ferotker Pierce, P.Gr M. of the Grand Lodge of Ireland, presided. Brother Robert Kidd, LL.D., was installed W.M. with tlie usual ceremonies by Brother Jenkins, P.M. The following brethren were elected to office:— S.W., Brother Russell; J.W., Brother Asher; S.D., Brother Watling; J.D., Brother Eastwood; 1.G., Brother Avey. Brother Hooper, D.P.G.M., andßrother Layers were re-elected treasurer and secretary ; and Brother Porter tyler. The banquet usual on such an occasion was dispensed with, on account of the recent bereavement in the family of the W.M. On December 23, the United Service Lodge met at the Masonic Hotel. Brother Doull was re-elected W.M. The following brethren were elected to office ; — S. W., Brother Rees ; J.W., Brother Wellsman ; S.D., Brother Mclutyre; J.L., Brother Palmer ; 1.G., Brother Chalmers ; secretary and treasurer, Brother Macready ; chaplain, Brother Deane ; tyler, Brother Porter. The Thames Lodge of Light met on St. John's Day at the Lodge-room, Pollenstreet, to perform the usual annual ceremony of installing officers for the ensuing year. The following brethren were elected : — W.M., Brother Walnutt; S.W., Brother Lipsey; J.W., Brother Hopcraft; S.D.. Brother Ballin; J.D., Brother Jones; 1.G,, Brother Liaird ; treasurer, Brother FitzGibbon ; secretary, Brother Jones; Chaplain, Brotbor Loveday ; tyler, Brother Ross. At tlie annual meeting of Masonic Lodge Waitemata the following officers-bearers were installed : — Brother Hay ward, W.M. ; Brother Wade, S.W.; Brother Elkin, J.W.; Brother Whitaker, S.D. ; Brother Hardie, J.D.; B; other Hurrell, E.C; Brother Parker, T. ; Brother xlose, treasurer; Brother Broughton, secretary ; and Brother the Rev. E. Heywood, chaplain.

OOEOMAJNDEL. December 5.

The Nil Desperandum battery has crushed 10 tons for the Little and Good, which yielded 660z. of retorted gold. This is a return of more than 640z. to the ton. — The All Nations crushed four tons, which furnished 14oz. of retorted gold. The Little Republic has had a small parcel put through the Whakaroa Battery which gives a high return. A ton and a half yielded 240z. 13dwt. 12gr. of melted gold, which was lodged in the Bank of New Zealand on December 10. This claim was only pegged out three weeks ago. The result of the crushing for the Harbour View at the Whakaroa Battery was 82oz. of retorted gold. — The Independent has had five tons crushed at the Nil Desperandum Battery, which yielded 6£oz. of retorted gold. Specimens had previously been taken from this stuff and pounded in a mortar, from which 6oz. of fine gold was obtained. — The Bay View crushing at the New Zealand battery yielded 5530z. 15dwt. of retorted gold, being nearly 2^ ounces to the ton. Work is being carried on briskly in order to send another lot to the mill. — The New Zealand battery has crushed 5 tons from tho Speedwell, which yielded 3oz.7dwt. of retorted gold. — The return of the Erin's Hope crushing at the Wha« karoa battery did not come up to the "expectations ol the shareholders : 9.8 tons were sent through the mill, which yielded 12dwt. to the ton, December 24.

The Dwarf intersected the Little Republic lode on Thursday evening, and found some • good specimens of gold, The Little Republic 1 trial crushing proved the lead to run upI wards of 16oz. to the ton. — The Nil Desperanidum Battery crushed 2£ tons forthe Rainbow ;End, which yielded 440z. of retorted gold, and •7 tons for the Flying Cloud, yielding6£oz. of retorted gold. The Christmas Box next occupied- the -mill with a small parcel. J It . waa cleaned s up this morning, and yielded 19oz, of retorted gold.
