"POLLY PLUM" AND MARTYRDOM.

To th« Editor of the Daily Southern Cross. Mr. Editor, — Although I agree with "Polly Plum" in the main, I cannot endorse all that lady's opinions. For instance, because we happen to live in a country where it is hot at Christmas, to call it martyrdom to have to eat roast beef and plum pudding on Christmas day is rather over-shooting the mark ; but perhaps ladies, like poetry, are allowed considerable figures of speech. For myself, a plain - plodding Englishman, I am oldfashioned enough to like many of our old customs, and should be more inclined to consider martyrdom the not' being able to get said roast beef and plum pudding ; and I will guarantee to find a goodly number who will endorse my opinion. "Polly Plum" |hints at strawberries and cream, salad and cold cmclten — noc mentioning ikat delicacy gooseberry fool, as substituted for the more solid dishes of roast beef and plum pudding in this country. Strawberries and cream ! ! delicious thought ; but how many, living near Auckland, can indulge in such visions, even including our friend, who, although she may overflow in the milk of human kindness, will find it rather difficult to get the cream, properly so called, when she has even obtained the strawberries. No, no !do not let us cry out against our old customs at home so long as they are innocent, and let us each put up with roast beef and plum pudding on Christ-mas-day, without feeling a thrill running through us that we have been martyred. -I am, &c, Old Gooseberry.
